MY SHELBY
Acrylic and Oil
H20" x L16"
Private Collection
We found Shelby at a puppy kennel when she was ten weeks old and she lived to be eleven. She was the only puppy that my little old lab/beagle BoBo would tolerate. She was on the small side for a purebred, reaching 32" height and at her heaviest weighing 115 pounds. She would sit on the couch with my friends and me with her back legs daintily crossed and her front paws on the floor. She could run and leap over fallen logs, sixreen feet between strides at her fastest. She outran and out-dodged a deer that was chasing her. If you were a stranger she wouldn't come within 20 feet of you. If you were in my home, she would put her great nose up to your face and examine you with her amber eyes, nostrils quivering. She loved her humans deeply.

Beach-combing at Kootenay Lake, I found a treasure. It was the
perfect profile of a guy with a cute overbite on the
body of a fish. I painted him swimming fast through a thick trail of
titanium white, ultramarine blue and cobalt turquoise, sniffing out the
alluring scent of dioxazine purple.

Maples in the autumn are the brightest reds and whitest bark against the dark nights of
late autumn in the Kootenays. I had a piece of maple board given to me and it seemed so appropriate to bring a maple to life on it! As the wind picked up one night the leaves fell exposing the bare branches.
I thought of how exposed a nesting owl would feel!
