The gift of self-expression
Two years ago, I attended "Da Vinci Night" at the Kimberley Arts Centre in Kimberley, BC
A professional and locally very well known artist, , Lori Joe, guided a group of about 30 of us to create a Van Gogh - "Olive Trees with Yellow Sky" usiing bold primary colors on a black canvas as is her style but incorporating his short powerful brush strokes and lines of energetic color. Amazing! We were all suddenly brilliant artists and none of our work was like another's yet all immediately proclaimed ""Van Gogh!"

It was fun, we learned something about his style and we were all, for those few hours, artists. emulating a master.
Why do we love to paint? Because anyone can do it. No holds barred. Yes, there are progressions and processes - for the ones who have that rare combination of talent, perseverance, education and professionalism, gallery doors and wallets open.. But we all are born with the gift of self-expression. before the world tries to squash us into a socially acceptable rut. I am so glad to see the generations coming who are not afraid to speak their minds, share their bold ideas and create a world. with room enough for everyone.
To create. To find joy in a moment of connection. To stand back and say to yourself, "There. I made that and it makes me happy.'
